A modern computer has several components, creating a very complex internal structure. The correct computer interfaces are needed to connect SSDs and hard drives to your computer. This often uses Serial Attached SCSI and Serial Advanced Technology Attachment interface. So, which one is better for your needs? A brief comparison of SATA and SAS will help you make the right choice.

Know about SAS and SATA

SAS is a high-end interface for storage systems. It provides dual benefits of SATA and SCSI. High scalability, reliability, and better speed are advantages of using SAS. The SAS interface is compatible with both SATA and SAS drives. So, regardless of the storage configuration, you can choose SAS.

SATA is another interface found in consumer-grade gadgets like laptops, computers, and hard drives. You can also use it in cold storage if the data is not accessible. It is easy to connect storage devices using SATA, which comes with multiple variations (1.0 to 3.0).

You can plug the SATA drive into your SAS connector. But, you will not be able to plug the SAS drive into the SATA connector.

Data transfer and overall performance

SAS drives are known for faster data transfer and superb performance. That is why you can choose SAS drives for many high-demand applications. Minimal access times and lower latency are other characteristics of SAS. They are the most suitable choice for data-intensive applications and virtualization.

The hard drive’s data transfer speed depends on the connector type. A SATA cable helps with data transfer at around 150MB/s. In the case of SATA-II, it is about 300MB/s. SAS cables are capable of moving data at the speed of 600MB/s. The latest versions transfer data at 1500MB/s.

Which one is more reliable?

SAS is designed to withstand regular use in your data centers. The ways to use the SATA and SAS drives are almost the same. But, there is a risk of slow performance of the drives. The MTBF for SAS is about 1.6 million hours of use. For SATA, it is about 700,000 hours.

No matter what tasks the drives perform, they will last for many years.

Cables

Both SATA and SAS cables have 2 ends. One end needs to be connected to power using a motherboard. Connect another end to a drive. The maximum length of a SAS cable is about 33 feet, while the length of a SATA is only 3 feet. However, you may find considerable variations in the length of SAS cables. They have more than 26 pins and work with multiple devices.

Cost of the drives

If you want a more affordable drive, you may choose SATA. The cost-effectiveness of SATA has made it highly popular for consumer-grade gadgets and PCs. On the contrary, SAS drives are the right choice for enterprise-grade environments, where reliability and consistent performance are vital.

The comparison between SATA and SASA drives will allow you to pick the right one. Shop at Velocity Tech Solutions to learn more in this industry.
