Apple iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are now the only non-iPhone 16 devices to support Apple Intelligence. While they were Apple’s top-shelf devices last year, these devices have now become an attractive proposition for those looking to get Apple’s Pro devices without spending the Pro-level money.
However, when it comes to choosing between the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, it is not a straightforward process. While the primary difference between the two is the screen size, there are other differences to consider as well. iPhone 15 Pro vs iPhone 15 Pro Max: Performance
The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are powered by Apple’s A17 Pro chip, a new silicon currently found on the iPhone 15 Pro lineup as well as the new iPad mini. This is a system-on-chip with a 6-core CPU, 6-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. This is the first smartphone chip to be fabricated using a 3-nanometer process, bringing improvement to the entire chip.
According to Apple, the A17 Pro is up to 10 per cent with microarchitectural and design improvements. In terms of single-core performance, the A17 Pro was roughly 16 per cent faster than the A16 Bionic while the multi-core performance was around 13 per cent faster. This chip even benchmarked above the M1, Apple’s first in-house silicon for its Mac computers.
With the A17 Pro, Apple also introduced the biggest GPU redesign in its history, delivering up to 20 per cent faster performance. The 6-core design, Apple claims, allows for increased peak performance and energy efficiency including support for hardware-accelerated ray tracing.
With the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone users get to experience AAA game titles such as Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 4, Death Stranding Director’s Cut, and Assassin’s Creed Mirage. This chip also includes a dedicated AV1 decoder to enable efficient, high-quality video experiences for streaming services.
Another big performance change comes in the form of a new USB controller to support USB 3.0 speeds on iPhone. The use of USB-C with USB 3.0 speeds means higher transfer speeds and video output up to 4K at 60fps HDR. In addition to CPU and GPU performance improvements, the A17 Pro also gets a 2GB increase in RAM compared to the A16 Bionic.
iPhone 15 Pro Max vs iPhone 15 Pro: Differences in performance
Since both the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max use the same A17 Pro chip, there is not much performance difference between the two. However, the two do differ in terms of screen size, camera performance, and battery life. The iPhone 15 Pro has a smaller 6.1-inch screen while the iPhone 15 Pro Max has a larger 6.7-inch display. If you like small phones, then the iPhone 15 Pro is the one to get.
The iPhone 15 Pro falls behind the iPhone 15 Pro Max in two areas – cameras and battery life. The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max share the same 48MP main camera with f/1.8 aperture, dual-pixel PDAF, sensor-shift OIS and a 12MP ultrawide camera. However, the camera system differs when you look at the telephoto camera with the iPhone 15 Pro getting a 12MP telephoto shooter with 3x optical zoom whereas the iPhone 15 Pro Max uses a periscope lens to deliver up to 5x optical zoom.
If you want a longer zoom range, then the iPhone 15 Pro Max is the one to get and you can use that zoom range for longer since the Pro Max is rated for up to 29 hours of video playback. The iPhone 15 Pro is rated for up to 23 hours of video playback. Compared to the iPhone 15 Pro, the iPhone 15 Pro Max delivers longer battery life, longer zoom, and a larger screen. If you are looking for those three things in your Pro phones then the iPhone 15 Pro Max is a no-brainer.
