A study has looked at how people meditate or carry out self-reflection before sleeping at night. As a result, researchers discovered some benefits and also prototypes of technology that might be maximized to encourage people to reflect.
Research carried out by senior at Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE), University of Washington, United States, Koyo Nakamura, stated that self-reflection allows people to communicate deeply with themselves. The goal is to assess past actions, emotions, feelings and behavior.
Researchers also found that self-reflection is important for mental and physical health and is a skill that can be applied in real-time to make better decisions.
Researcher’s Advice for Technology
In this research, Nakamura was joined by fellow HCDE students, namely Hannah Mei, Han Feng, and Sebastian Priss.
They looked at data collected from interviews and surveys to make suggestions to encourage people to reflect at night.
Their research concentration is to provide suggestions or optimize reflection product prototypes (technology).
“The team’s main findings regarding how people reflect at night include varying attitudes towards the use of technology in bed, difficulty in behaving after having reflection results, difficulty falling asleep after prolonged reflection, and emotional triggers related to nighttime reflection,” wrote the researchers, quoted from the University of Washington HCDE website.
To encourage future exploration in this area, the research team made some suggestions for technology designers to consider, to encourage people’s reflection at night, namely:
1. Unobtrusive screen-based interactions

2. Support users in behaving according to the conclusions of their reflections

3. Consider negative emotions that may arise in evening reflection
Compared to reflection during the day, reflection at night tends to be about negative experiences. Sometimes it forces people to stay awake longer than expected.
Researchers say this should be known to designers who want to optimize technology to encourage people to reflect.
