Where to Find the Man-in-Stone
To find the Man-in-Stone, head to the Fright Cliff area within the Yellow Wind Ridge of Chapter 2. Start your journey in Sandgate Village, where you must defeat the King of Flowing Sands and the Second Rat Prince. After overcoming these foes, proceed across a rope bridge located to the right of a large sealed stone door.
Continue along the path through the Fright Cliff area until you reach the Squall Hideout Shrine. From there, take the outdoor path on the right that leads to a narrow crevice. As you navigate this area, you may hear someone calling out from below. Be cautious of ambushes from a new enemy type known as the Poisestone, a smaller and more agile variant of the Palestone that can dash and shoot projectiles. Defeating a Poisestone will eliminate its stone body, but its legs will remain active and can deliver powerful kicks if not dealt with promptly.
At the end of the crevice, you will encounter the Man-in-Stone, who reveals that he has been trapped in his rocky form. He believes that one of the rock guai in a nearby cave holds the key to reversing his condition and asks you to retrieve it.
The cave he refers to is located just above the crevice on the left side of the path through the Squall Hideout region. Enter the large tunnel and stick to the left side to confront any Rock Guai you encounter. At the end of the cave, you will find a massive statue embedded with glowing blue crystals, which is the object of the Man-in-Stone’s quest. However, be wary of a Poisestone lurking along the walls, ready to ambush you.
Boss Battle: Mother of Stone
The next challenge involves a boss battle against the Mother of Stone, a giant statue embedded with crystals. Interestingly, the Mother of Stone does not engage in combat directly; instead, you will face an onslaught of Palestones that emerge from the ground and walls around you. This battle requires endurance, as you will need to survive multiple waves of these enemies.
After sustaining enough damage, the Mother of Stone will roar, signaling the appearance of a Palestone to defend her. This is your cue to pause your attack, regain stamina, and prepare to dodge the incoming threats. Successfully managing each wave while minimizing damage is crucial, as you will need to understand the melee and ranged attacks of the Palestones.
Initially, you will face two waves of single Palestones. The third wave will introduce two Palestones simultaneously, which can quickly become overwhelming if they coordinate their attacks. While deflecting their ranged quartz missiles is manageable, you must also be wary of one attempting to body slam you.
Utilize all your abilities to stay alive during this encounter. Focus your Spirit attacks on one target, unleash any stored Focus Points, and employ skills like Immobilize or Cloud Step to avoid danger. After defeating a total of six Palestones across several waves, you can finally turn your attention back to the Mother of Stone. Continue attacking until the boss shatters, rewarding you with the Stone Essence Key Item, along with some Stone Spirits and Yaoguai Cores.
Returning to the Man-in-Stone
After acquiring the Stone Essence, return to the crevice where you first met the Man-in-Stone. Upon handing over the Stone Essence, he will emerge from the ground and mock you for your gullibility. This prompts a confrontation, as he transforms into a boss-like enemy.
Despite having a boss health bar, the Man-in-Stone is relatively easy to defeat, possessing only slightly more health than a regular Pitstone and using standard attacks. Use Immobilize to control him, build up Focus Points, and deliver a charged strike to defeat him. After realizing his mistake, the Man-in-Stone will burrow back into the ground and plead for mercy.
You can then re-harvest the Stone Essence from him, which will transform into the Azure Dust Transformation Spell. This spell grants you the ability to transform into a Rock Guai, a powerful but slow form. While transformed, you will be immune to all status effects and deal significant damage that can stagger most enemies. Instead of building Might through attacks, you will accumulate it by taking damage, allowing you to unleash a powerful jump attack spell in retaliation.

As anadded bonus, if you continue to engage with the Man-in-Stone, he will promise to prepare items for sale during your next visit. Be sure to take advantage of this opportunity, as he will offer a selection of high-priced goods that can enhance your gameplay experience.
